There is an enormous effort underway to help get things back on track in the county right now, but there is SO much information, and it is scattered here and there, lots of it on Facebook.  Not everyone has Facebook, and we're all not friends with the same people, so hopefully this site can serve as a place to get some of that info out there.

If you have information that needs to be posted, please send it to me at dave@morganminute.com , and I'll get it posted.

Needs List: Advance Auto Food Station

Please help her out however you can…

From Georganna Hill:

The cooking mission at Advance Auto has been very blessed in donations and support. We hope it is continued! With AmeriCorps’ exit (and the lack of a new team being requested to come in to aid the county), a huge gap in staffing the effort in feeding folks has been created. In order for this nourishment effort to continue, volunteers and manpower are needed from the community. If you can only spare thirty minutes, please come help set up between 9 and 10 or breakdown/clean up between 2and 3. If you can only spare an hour, how about coming to help serve from noon to one? Another option: If you and your civic organization OR church group would like to dedicate a day of community service by running the show for a day, please just let me know. (The Photography Club, Morgan Elliot 4-H Shooting Sports, and Chi Omega from MSU have already done this, or are signed up to do it this week! Thank you!)

Supplies still needed: *** Foil Pans (cheapest source is $1 aisle at IGA for the deep, roasting pans) *** Heavy Duty Foil *** Gallon Size storage bags *** ICE

Any and all help is appreciated. Thank you to the many who have already helped and to those who may be moved to help soon!

Have had some personal donations come in (Thank you!!!!)… could certainly use more… Meat and charcoal are desperately needed. I am working on some corporate donations and the like, but need help in the mean time in order to feed workers, volunteers, and those in the community who need a meal. Have SOME meat… Need more… Going to start grilling at 11 and hope and pray that He blesses us with kind hearts… even at a few pounds each. Thanks to everyone for putting up with all my Facebook Meat Begging (I think that is an organization someone needs to start ~ FMB) ha ha
The vision is that we will become organized enough to make meals daily in West Liberty and in time to ‘taxi’ out to workers in the outlying parts of the county. Please help if you can???? ~~ Georganna

CHFS News – Application Period for Disaster Food Benefits Extended for Eight Counties

Application Period for Disaster Food Benefits Extended for Eight Counties

New deadline is Wednesday, March 28

FRANKFORT, Ky. (March 23, 2012) – The Cabinet for Health and Family Services (CHFS) is extending the application period for Kentuckians living and working in eight counties that were affected by recent tornadoes and severe weather to apply for federal disaster food benefits.

Kentuckians living or working in Johnson, Laurel, Lawrence, Magoffin, Martin, Morgan, Pendleton and Wolfe counties who were affected by the March 2, storms and tornadoes will have until Wednesday, March 28, to apply for the disaster benefits.

The Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP), part of the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Food and Nutrition Service (FNS), approved the extension and is providing resources to purchase food for residents of these counties, part of a federal disaster declaration from the March 2 storms. People who work in these counties and have lost income may also apply.

SNAP is formerly known as food stamps. CHFS’s Department of Community Based Services administers the program in all 120 Kentucky counties.

One-time disaster food benefits

Residents who live or work in the affected counties and do not currently participate in the regular SNAP program or are not eligible for food benefits under the normal SNAP eligibility guidelines may apply for temporary help with food costs. To be eligible, the household must have:

  • ·         Experienced damage to or destruction of their home or self-owned business;
  • ·         Disaster-related expenses not expected to be reimbursed in March;
  • ·         A reduction, termination or delay in receiving income; or
  • ·         No access to liquid financial assets, such as checking or savings accounts.

The household’s income and accessible resources received in the month of the disaster will be counted in determining eligibility for the food benefits.  These are one-time benefits based on the household’s size.

The household’s income and accessible resources received in March will be counted in determining eligibility for the food benefits.  These one-time benefits are based on the household’s size.

How to apply

Applicants must bring proper personal identification and verification of residency. It is also recommended, if possible, that applicants bring proof of Social Security numbers for all household members; take home pay and income received in the month the disaster caused losses; accessible resources like savings and checking accounts and cash on hand; and statements to verify disaster-related expenses.

The DCBS offices in the following counties will accept applications Monday, March 26, through Wednesday, March 28. Office hours are 8 a.m. – 4:30 p.m.

Residents should contact their local office for more information.

Families who have lost income and live or work in the disaster counties can apply in the following locations:

Credit Freeze/Fraud Alert Info

Received from Julie Nickell Ferguson:

If you had any personal documents swept away by the 2/29 or 3/2 tornados, it might be a good idea to protect yourself from further stresses.

I’ve listed the basic information below…..but you can visit each credit bureau’s website for detailed info.

You must call each credit bureau and file an separate “credit freeze.”

If you call them,(rather than applying online) they’ll waive the $10.00 fee due to the natural disaster (tornado).  See sidenote below:

You can call one bureau and they will share the information for a “fraud alert” with the other two within 48 hours.

Each person in your household will need to file individually.  You cannot call for your husband/wife.

Here are the numbers:

Equifax                 800-685-1111

TransUnion         800-916-8800

Experian              888-397-3742

SIDENOTE:  At first the customer service rep didn’t see a natural disaster ‘flagged’ anywhere in her system  and tried to deny me.  I then told the CSR if she Googled “West Liberty, KY” she would see info from CNN, TWC and all other national news outlets that an EF3 was on the ground for 95 miles and ripped right thru the middle of our town!  Then I mentioned that people over 150 miles away were contacting individuals in West Liberty returning checks, pay stubs, etc with personal information on them.  It took about 2 minutes for her to “research” that and she took care of it.

FEMA/DRC Documents (for printing)

These  funds will be used to support families transitioning back into homes  as Frontier joins in helping families in our service  area http://www.frontierhousing.org/where.htm.  We will focus our efforts in Morgan, Menifee, and  Magoffin counties; recently hardest hit. Given  Frontier Housing’s 37 years of experience providing housing  solutions, we know our proper role will not be in immediate  emergency or disaster relief.

Our strength will be in offering  help to families longer term as they struggle to bring back some  normalcy.  We know the many unmet needs that will emerge for  these families when the immediate compassionate relief is past and  they try to re-establish a household. Get Your Shots!

A good reminder from Jen Adkins Reynolds on Facebook:

Three nurses have told me that if you are living/working/volunteering in the area that it might not be a bad idea to get a tetanus booster and a Hepatitis A shot (especially after some post-Joplin stories). The health dept is now located in a temp trailer down by the old bowling alley/MSU Ctr. They have plenty of the vaccines. I got mine this morning. I think they’re there 8-6:30 M-F (743.3744) and are happy to answer questions.

OH! and also…right now they are FREE!

The Red Cross will also be providing direct financial assistance to people with verified, disaster-caused needs.

Our current client assistance location is at Morgan Central Elementary School at 3201 Hwy. 460 W. in West Liberty.  If individuals or families are not able to travel to that location they can call 1-800-696-3873 for information about assistance.

Please Call if You Need Help

Just want to get this word out there again, that if you NEED help, there are teams of volunteers ready and waiting to lend a hand. Just call 1-606-783-8756 and they will help get you set up.

I know we are a proud bunch in this area and hate to ask for help, but if the calls for assistance start to drop, many of the agencies will start to pull out. So, be SURE to call if you can use some help, even if it is something you think you might be able to handle on your own.

You may find out later that it is more than you can bear. The emotional side of this will continue on for a long time, so please, reach out and take a helping hand while it is available.

UPDATE: 3.13.2012

This message from Jami Hornbuckle at MSU:

Many of the organized groups in Morgan County there to help with relief are having a difficult time getting people to make work requests. Without these requests coming in, the groups will pull out. In fact some may pull out as early as this evening.

I NEED YOUR HELP getting people to submit work requests. There are three forms attached but the most important one is the Work Intake Form. Please distribute this far and wide and get it in as many hands as possible. Completed forms go to the Volunteer Center at MSU at West Liberty. People may also call in work requests at 606.783.8756.

From Grace Baptist Church

This is from Grace Baptist Church:

Mike Lindon

I want to thank every one for their prayer and support at we continue the work of restoration. I have been so touched by the compassion and help shown to Morgan county. Our spirits have been lifted and our burden made lighter by the love and helping hands of so many. We along with Samaritans Purse had around three hundred volunteers go out through Grace Church Saturday alone. More food, water and building supplies are coming in every day, and we are sending them out as fast as possible. As we get the supplies in we have teems taking care packages out into the tornado damaged area and finding places for our chainsaw and tree removal teems to work. This has been the most effective way to work. People are not coming to the shelter or government agencies for help so we are going out to help them. Our volunteer count is around one thousand people. And we will start again tomorrow morning 7:30 am. The needs are now changing from emergency supplies to water, tools to build with , building supplies, gift cards from Wal- Mart or Lowe’s would be very helpful. We also have a disaster relief fund set up at Grace Baptist Church and 100% will go for the disaster relief. Not many organizations can do that, but at Grace Church we can and will. We have Heavy equipment and volunteers coming in and it will all be free of charge when it is used on you property. Come by and help out, or if you have damage on your house or land stop and get some help. God is doing great things in Morgan County come and experience the grace of God first hand.
